Hyperpigmentation – Melasma

What is Hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition characterized by darkened areas of skin caused by excess melanin production. It can occur on the face and other parts of the body due to factors such as sun exposure, hormonal changes, aging, and skin injuries. Common types of hyperpigmentation include sun spots, age spots, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

What is Melasma?
Melasma is a specific type of hyperpigmentation that typically presents as brown or grayish patches on the skin, primarily affecting the face. It is commonly seen in women and is often triggered by hormonal changes, pregnancy, or birth control use. Sun exposure and genetic predisposition also play significant roles in the development of melasma.

Causes of Hyperpigmentation and Melasma

  • Sun Exposure: UV rays stimulate melanin production, leading to dark spots.
  • Hormonal Changes: Pregnancy, birth control, and hormone therapy can trigger melasma.
  • Skin Injuries: Acne, cuts, and other skin trauma can leave behind dark patches.
  • Aging: Natural aging processes can result in uneven skin tone and pigmentation.
